Fort Hays State senior first baseman Dusty Washburn was honored on Tuesday (May 26) as a CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. Washburn was selected to the third team as an infielder. Fort Hays State baseball seniors Eric Gilliland and Dusty Washburn were honored on Thursday as CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team selections. They are two of just 11 players in District 7 of the College Division (includes NCAA Division II and III and NAIA) to earn this distinction. The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced the All-MIAA Baseball Team for the 2009 season on Thursday (May 7). Fort Hays State had eight players named to the team, which included three second-team and five honorable mention selections. The Tigers honored on the team include Alex Harvey, Greg Bieker, A.J. The teams were originally scheduled to play in Topeka on Tuesday, but the weather system that hit the Midwest left the Washburn field in unplayable condition. The teams will play a doubleheader at Larks Park beginning at 12:30 p.m. (March 31). The games can be heard on KAYS Radio (1400 AM).

The Fort Hays State baseball team hosted Pittsburg State in the first two games of a four-game series with the Gorillas on Saturday afternoon (May 3) in Hays. The Tigers, already locked in as a participant at the MIAA Tournament, were attempting to move their record against NCAA opponents over .500 for regional consideration. However, the Tigers dropped both games of the doubleheader to Pittsburg State by scores of 5-4 and 15-7. The Fort Hays State baseball squad opened with the first two games of a four-game series with #14 ranked Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo., on Saturday afternoon (April 19). The Tigers became the first team in 11 years to defeat the Mules in both games of a doubleheader in Warrensburg. The last time Central Missouri lost both games of a doubleheader on its home field was in 1997 against Missouri-Rolla. Fort Hays State University head baseball coach Rick Sabath announced the signing of four student athletes for the 2009 season. Three of the four will transfer from Colby Community College and one comes to the program from high school.
