Five Tiger Wrestlers Named To RMAC All-Academic Team

Fort Hays State had five wrestlers named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Academic Team on Tuesday, April 7, 2009. Junior Danny Grater was the lone Tiger to earn first team honors. Junior Shawn Kuhlman earned second team honors. Junior Levi Younkin and sophomores Cody Gillespie and Dylan Loyd were each listed to the honor roll. To qualify for the honor, the individuals must have a GPA of 3.20 or better, be a starter or key reserve, and completed two consecutive semesters of three quarters at their current institution. The Fort Hays State wrestling team landed four individuals on the 2008-2009 NWCA Division II All-Academic Team. The Tigers as a team ranked ninth in the nation with a GPA of 3.192. Truman State won the Academic National Championship for the third year in a row with a 3.467 team GPA. Earning first team honors for FHSU was Danny Grater. Fort Hays State wrestlers Tommy Edgmon and Danny Grater each earned All-American honors at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in Houston, Texas (March 13-14). Edgmon was the national runner-up at 125 pounds and Grater finished sixth at 157 pounds. The Tigers finished fourth in the team standings, but had five individuals qualify for the national tournament. The Fort Hays State wrestling squad competed in the MIAA Dual Championships on Sunday in Warrensburg, Mo. The event showcased the four schools that are members of the MIAA, even though it is not recognized as a championship sport for the conference. The Fort Hays State wrestling squad took to the road on Thursday evening for a non-conference dual with #5 ranked Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Okla. The teams locked up in a very exciting dual that came down to the last match, which pitted 184 pounders Tyler Gonzales (FHSU) and Daniel Morrison (UCO). Fort Hays State University wrestling coach Cody Bickley announced the signing of Levi Younkin for the 2008-09 season. Younkin, a native of Oakley, Kan., wrestled for two years at Colby Community College. He was a NJCAA All-American as a freshman for CCC, placing sixth at nationals in 2005-06. Younkin spent last year at Wichita State University, where he wrestled for WSU's club team. He finished fifth in the nation at club nationals in 2007-08. Read more...

Fort Hays State University head wrestling coach Cody Bickley announced today the signing of Tommy Edgmon for the 2008-09 season. Edgmon, a native of Goddard, Kan., will wrestle at 125 pounds and comes to the program from Pratt Community College. While at Pratt CC, he was a two-time NJCAA Qualifier and was ranked as high as #4 in the country his sophomore season. In high school, he was a three-time state champion and finished his career with an overall record of 122-16. His senior season, he was named the Class 6A Wrestler of the Year. He was also a Brute Adidas Nationals Champion.
Tiger Wrestling Holds Post-Season Banquet

The Fort Hays State wrestling program held its post-season banquet last Friday night inside the new Robbins Alumni Center. The event was co-sponsored by the Tiger Takedown Club and Whiskey Creek, who prepared the meal. Upon completion of the meal, head coach Cody Bickley announced several awards and a season-recap video was shown.

The Fort Hays State wrestling team will be holding their annual post-season banquet on Friday, April 18th, at 6:00 p.m. in the new Robbins Center adjacent to Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays. Doors will open at 5:00 p.m., for socializing prior to the banquet. The banquet will feature awards, dinner and a highlight video. The National Wrestling Coaches Association released its Division II All-Academic Wrestling Team for the 2007-08 season. Eight individuals from Fort Hays State received the honors out of 133 student athletes selected from 35 universities and colleges. Fort Hays State ranked third in team GPA (3.243), behind Truman State (3.394) and Nebraska-Kearney (3.334). Truman State has now won the Academic National Championship as a team the past two years. Fort Hays State University had four wrestlers compete at the NCAA Division II Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa this past weekend (March 14-15). The four competing were James Annon at 141 pounds, Danny Grater at 157 pounds, Blake Malloy at 174 pounds, and Tyler Gonzales at 197 pounds.
