In its last chance to qualify for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships, the Fort Hays State women's track and field team traveled to Emporia, Kan. on Saturday (May 12) to compete at the Sam Williams Twilight Qualifier.

The Fort Hays State men's track and field team had their last chance to set marks for the NCAA Outdoor Championships this weekend at the Sam Williams Twilight Qualifier in Emporia, Kan. In the javelin, Jake Durham went over 200 feet, going 201-6 to hit a provisional mark.

The Fort Hays State baseball team has reached its first-ever MIAA Baseball Tournament Championship as it plays No. 5 ranked Central Missouri at 11 am on Sunday (May 13). Fort Hays State needs to win that game to force a second championship game in the double-elimination format, as Central Missouri has yet to lose in the tournament. The second game would start approximately 30 minutes to an hour following the first game. The Tigers enter at 29-23 overall, while Central Missouri is 43-7.

A Ryan Busboom single in the sixth gave FHSU a 3-2 lead and then Kyle Leroy and Brett Macari made it hold up, sending the Tigers to the MIAA Baseball Tournament Championship Game on Sunday against fifth-ranked Central Missouri. The Tigers improved to 29-23 on the year with the win. The Tigers will have to defeat Central Missouri twice on Sunday to claim the championship, while Central Missouri would have to win just once.

After the Tigers eliminated Washburn by a score of 11-7 on Friday evening, only three teams remain in the 2012 MIAA Baseball Tournament Championship in Kansas City, Kan. Central Missouri and Missouri Western meet at 11 am Saturday and the loser will play Fort Hays State at 2:30 pm for the chance to play the winner of the 11 am game in the championship Sunday.

Fort Hays State overcame six errors to eliminate Washburn from the MIAA Baseball Tournament Championship on Friday evening (May 11) at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan. The Tigers trailed 4-0 early, but rallied back to take the lead in bottom of the fourth and went on to win 11-7. FHSU is now 28-23 overall and will play the loser of the Central Missouri vs. Missouri Western game on Saturday (May 12) at 2:30 pm. The winner of that game will move on to the championship on Sunday.

Athletes of the Week
Alex Hendee
Men's Track and Field
Alex Hendee earned Athlete of the Week for his performance at the MIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Hendee helped the TIgers to a fifth place finish as he took second and third in his two events.

Hendee was second in the 5,000, timing a 15:18 in the event, which was 3 seconds behind UCM's Lab Sialo. In the 1,500, Hendee placed third just 0.33 off first in a very tight race.

During the 2012 season, Hendee twice earned MIAA Track Student-Athlete of the Week. He was also All-MIAA in the fall in cross country.

The Tigers as a team ended up fifth at the MIAA Championships with 92.5 points. Pittsburg State won the MIAA Championship with 168.5 points.
Makayla McPhail
Women's Track and Field
Makayla McPhail earned Athlete of the Week for her performance over the weekend at the MIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. McPhail was the Tigers' only individual champion and broke the FHSU school record in the javelin throw.

McPhail, a sophomore from Liberal, Kan., topped the school record with a mark of 159-4 in the javelin. The record was previously set by Reginia Taylor in 1999 (158-7). McPhail won the event at the MIAA Championships by nearly 10 feet.

The mark is the sixth time McPhail has passed the automatic qualifying standard and this time the distance ranks No. 2 in Division II this season, only behind a 161-11.

The Tigers women's track and field team finished eighth at the MIAA Championships this past weekend.
