The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Tuesday, August 24 the preseason regional cross country rankings in Division II. The Fort Hays State men’s team checked in at No. 3 in the South Central region, behind Tarleton State from the Lone Star Conference and MIAA foe Pittsburg State.

Partnering with SIDEARM Sports, one of the top website providers for collegiate athletics, Fort Hays State’s new athletics website is more user friendly for Tiger fans. The website address remains the same as the old site, www.fhsuathletics.com, only with a major facelift.

The Fort Hays State volleyball program begins its second season under head coach Kurt Kohler after finishing 7-27 overall in 2009, with a 3-17 record in the MIAA. Only three letterwinners return for the Tigers, whose roster will feature 14 freshman and 2 junior college transfers.

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Tuesday, August 24 the preseason regional cross country rankings in Division II. The Fort Hays State women’s team is ranked No. 5 in the South Central Region behind fellow MIAA members Missouri Southern, Truman State, Pittsburg State and Northwest Missouri State.

Even with a 6-5 finish and the first winning season for the Tigers as members of the MIAA, the Tiger defense struggled throughout last year due to several scheme changes and injuries. Thanks to a very potent offense, the Tigers were able to overcome some of those struggles by scoring the second-most points for a season in school history. The Tiger defense was among the best in NCAA Division II in 2008 and looks to return to form in 2010.

Athletes of the Week
Mike Garrison
Football
Garrison accounted for 348 yards of total offense in the season opener against Western State this past Saturday. He was 18-of-30 passing, completing 14 of his last 17 attempts, good for 248 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for a team-high 100 yards and one touchdown.
Gentry Linscott
Women's Cross Country
Linscott was the top women's runner in the Open Range Festival (the annual time trial to begin the year for FHSU). She covered the five-mile layout in 31 minutes and 33 seconds. The Effingham, Kan., sophomore led the Tigers in two races last year as a true freshman.
