Tiger Athletics Welcomes 2017 Hall of Fame Inductees on October 14

Fort Hays State Athletics will welcome six new members into the Tiger Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, October 14, 2017. The inductees include Amber (Zoglman) Barkley (volleyball), Brian Bates (baseball), Dr. Edward Hammond (contributor), Jon Haselhorst (track & field), Paul Simmons (football & baseball), and Bob Smith (wrestling coach). The induction ceremony will take place the morning of October 14 at the Memorial Union Ballroom on the campus of Fort Hays State University at 10 am. The inductees will be recognized at halftime of the football game vs. Washburn at 2:00 pm.
 
13114Amber (Zoglman) Barkley – Volleyball (2001-2004)
Amber (Zoglman) Barkley, native of Goddard, Kansas, was a two-time All-America performer for the Fort Hays State Volleyball team. She was an honorable mention All-America selection by the AVCA as a junior in 2003 and a second team selection as a senior in 2004, while earning All-RMAC First Team honors both years. Zoglman produced the two highest single-season hitting percentages in the program's NCAA Division II history, hitting .398 as a senior and .388 as a junior. She is one of only two players in the program's NCAA history to have at least 500 kills and 100 blocks in the same season, accomplishing the feat as a senior with 517 kills and 118 blocks. Zoglman is one of only four players in the program's NCAA history to reach 500 kills in a season. Zoglman finished her career with 1,198 kills and 299 blocks, ranking fifth in program history in kills and fourth in the program's NCAA history for blocks, and had a staggering .361 career hitting percentage.
 

13109Brian Bates – Baseball (1970-1973)
Brian Bates, native of Alton, Kansas, was a member of the Fort Hays State baseball team from 1970 to 1973. He was a two-time All-District 10 and All-GPAC First Team selection. Bates is the all-time leader in career wins at Fort Hays State with 28. He had 18 of those wins over his final two years, going 8-2 as a junior in 1972 and 10-3 as a senior in 1973. Bates made 57 appearances in his career, which is third-most all-time at FHSU, posting a school record 2.17 career earned run average in 277 and 2/3 innings pitched that still stands today. His 1.20 ERA in 1972 is third-best for a single season in school history, a season in which he pitched 82 and 2/3 innings. Bates had 162 strikeouts in his career, which is third-most in school history.
 


13110Dr. Edward H. Hammond – Contributor
Dr. Edward H. Hammond was president of Fort Hays State University for 28 years from 1987 to 2014. On his watch, Fort Hays State earned two national titles (women's basketball in 1991 and men's basketball in 1996) and one national runner-up finish (baseball in 2000). Hammond was instrumental in transitioning Fort Hays State University from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) to the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) in 1991. He was also instrumental in Fort Hays State's transition from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in 2006. He also helped Fort Hays State add four sports (softball, men's and women's soccer, and women's golf), while three new athletic facilities were built (Tiger Stadium, Bickle-Schmidt Indoor Training Facility, and FHSU Soccer Stadium) and numerous upgrades occurred to existing athletic facilities in his time as President of FHSU.
 

13111Jon Haselhorst – Track & Field (1987-1989)
A native of Hays, Kansas, Jon Haselhorst was a member of the track and field team from 1987 to 1989. He was a two-time national champion at FHSU winning the indoor 55-meter hurdles in 1988 and the outdoor 110-meter hurdles in 1989. He finished as a four-time All-American in the hurdles, adding a national runner-up performance in the indoor 55-meter hurdles in 1989 and a fourth-place finish in the outdoor 110-meter hurdles in 1988. Haselhorst was a three-time CSIC and NAIA District 10 outdoor champion, taking top honors in the 110-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles in 1988 and the 110-meter hurdles in 1989. Haselhorst still owns school records in the 55-meter hurdles for indoor (7.1 seconds) and 110-meter hurdles for outdoor (13.8 seconds).
 


13112Paul Simmons – Football & Baseball (1967-1969)
Paul Simmons, native of Denton, Kansas, was a standout two-sport athlete at Fort Hays State in football and baseball for two years from 1967-69 after transferring from Highland Community College. Simmons was an NAIA All-America selection as a senior in 1968 on the gridiron, leading the Tigers with 117 tackles at linebacker, while also recording two interceptions. He earned All-District 10 and All-CIC First Team honors that year. Simmons also had a solid baseball career for the Tigers, leading the team in batting average (.389) and RBI (15) as a junior in 1968, while not committing an error. He recorded seven extra-base hits and 11 RBI as a senior in 1969. Simmons received the Paul "Busch" Gross Award in 1969, given to the graduating athlete deemed most outstanding in scholarship, citizenship, leadership, and athletics at Fort Hays State. Simmons is also a member of the Highland Community College Hall of Fame.
 

13113Bob Smith – Wrestling Coach (1992-2000)
A native of Denver, Colorado, Smith was the head wrestling coach at Fort Hays State from 1992 to 2000. In his eight years as head coach, Smith produced 13 All-Americans and 9 NWCA All-Academic Team members. His teams finished in the Top 12 at nationals in each of his last four seasons with a ninth place finish in 2000 as the highest in the program's NCAA history. Smith helped transition the program from the NAIA to the NCAA after spending 33 years as head wrestling coach at Wray High School in Colorado. He is a member of the National High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame for his efforts at Wray High, and a member of the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame for his time at Fort Hays State. He is also a member of the Colorado High School Activities Association Hall of Fame, University of Northern Colorado Hall of Fame, and Colorado High School Coaches Hall of Fame. He turned around a struggling program at Fort Hays State and built it into one of the most respected programs in the nation at the NCAA Division II level. He was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1997 and accumulated 43 dual wins in his time at FHSU. Smith had such a profound impact on the Tiger Wrestling program that FHSU holds an annual tournament in his name.
